Hepatological status of Beta-thalassemia major patients in Erbil City: Case Control Study

Author: SARKAWT ALI, OMER QADIR MOHAMAD AMIN
Abstract: To find out the relationship between blood transfusion, elevated liver enzymes and positive HCV antibody in beta thalassemia primary patients. Patients and method: In this research 40 patients, 20 Female and 20 Male (age ranged from 10y-38y) with beta thalassemia major, and 40 control subjects, 20 Female and 20 Male (age ranged from 9y-33y) were studied. Hematological assessment includes CBC and Blood film morphology. Assessment of liver function test and viral markers for HBsAg, HCV Ab and HIV Ab were done by the researcher for both cases and control groups. There was a significant elevation of ALT, AST and ALP among thalassemic cases while none of the control subjects had changed in the liver enzymes (P< 0.001). All thalassemic cases with a positive viral marker for HCV had elevated liver enzymes significantly. While among the HCV negative thalassemic patients, none of them had elevated enzymes (P< 0.001). Majority of patients with positive HCV (37.5 %) were between 11-20 years of age.Our study demonstrates that Liver enzymes were elevated in all thalassemic patients (but more in HCV positive patients). HCV Ab was positive in nearly half of thalassemic patients mainly between the age of 11-20years. HIV Ab and HBs Ag were negative in all patients and control groups.
