PHARMACOLOGICAL ACTIVITIES OF ASTAXANTHIN

Abstract: Astaxanthin is a group of carotenoids which comes under xanthophyll groups. Astaxanthin was found to be present in microorganisms such as Haematococcus pluvialis, Chlorella zofingiensis, Chlorococcum, and Phaffia rhodozyma. Astaxanthin shows atleast 10 times more potent antioxidant than other carotenoids such as ? carotene, canthaxanthin, lutein, lycopene and zeaxanthin. Astaxanthin provide reddish orange color in various crustaceans includes salmon, crabs, lobster, shrimp and even non aquatic species such as the flamingo. The use of astaxanthin as a nutritional supplement has been rapidly growing in foods, feeds, nutraceuticals and pharmaceuticals. Astaxanthin has many pharmacological activity such as anticancer, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antidiabetic etc. Astaxanthin products are available in the form of capsule, soft gel, tablet, powder, biomass, cream, energy drink, oil and extract in the market. In this paper the update information about the sources, characteristic and pharmacological activities of astaxanthin has been reviewed.
