Correlation of carcinoma antigen (ca 15-3) serum assay with clinicopathological parameters in women with invasive ductal carcinoma

Author: DR. JAIN, DR. ARVIND BHAKE, DR. SUNITA VAGHA, A.R. NARKHEDE
Abstract: Background: Breast cancer is the primary cancer in women due to morbidity and mortality. The present study attends an aspect of breast cancer that would enable the clinicians and laboratory physicians to look into CA 15-3 as a definitive or an alternative laboratory parameter at predicting the outcome of Invasive Ductal Carcinoma (IDC), its recurrence and its treatment. MUCIN -1 (MUC 1) gene encodes a transmembrane glycoprotein which is expressed on the ductal surface of normal glandular epithelium. It is pathologically significant as it is known to reduce, cell to cell and cell to matrix interaction. A proteolytic shading of the extracellular domain is known to be released in circulation, which is the product of MUC – 1 gene in an under-glycosylated form that is a Cancer Antigen (CA 15-3). The aim of the present study is knowing the significance of serum levels of CA 15-3 in correlation to other prognostic clinic-pathological parameters and their comparisons in known biopsy proven patients of Invasive Ductal Carcinoma who have to undergo the mastectomy and receive neo-adjuvant and/or adjuvant chemotherapy. Objectives - To correlate amongst the serum CA 15-3 levels with - age (years) <40> and menopausal status in women and - tumour size, nodal status and metastasis (TNM staging) and - histological grade (BR score) and- molecular subtypes in women with IDC (Luminal A, B ,Her-2-neu enriched tumours ,Triple negative) and local site recurrence in the operated cases of IDC in women . Methods – It is an observational and inter-variable comparison with analysis that is going to be done in Department of Pathology, JNMC, Sawangi (Meghe), Wardha. In this study we will going to be determine preoperative levels of CA 15-3 by analysers, KMECLIA technique/Enzyme Linked Fluorescent Assay (ELFA) in 50 patients (of biopsy diagnosed invasive ductal carcinoma) by using CA 15-3 serum marker on chemi-luminescence immune assay / by chromogenic enzyme linked Fluorescent assay by standard methods in the diagnosed cases of invasive ductal carcinoma of breast. Results – The result will be undertaken in SPSS software. Conclusion – The conclusion will be based on the findings for study of protocol.
