Author: KERVI MEHTA, PRADEEP SUNE, AMOLI BELSARE
Abstract: Background: Age related macular degeneration account for global blindness especially in the countries which are developing like India. Many risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, smoking, sedentary lifestyle, BMI all are associated with ARMD. To find the association of these factors and type of ARMD. It requires effective surveillance and preventive policies to minimize its prevalence. Trial design: Hospital based Prospective, case control trail will be conducted in department of ophthalmology, AVBRH. Methods: Total of 260 subjects will be included in the study. Out of which 130 subjects diagnosed of age related macular degeneration will be taken as cases will be screened thorough detailed history of risk factors .130 subjects who are diagnosed free from age related macular degeneration will be taken as control. Results: we expect to see a statistically significant relation between gender and ARMD that female gender have higher predisposition for developing ARMD than males . Age group of 66-75 have higher risk of developing ARMD.Increasing age, current cigarette smoking, family history showed strong and consistent association with late ARMD. Risk factors such as hypertension and higher BMI showed strong associations. Conclusion: ARMD is a cause for severe and permanent central visual loss among old aged so management is required which is still ineffective. To prevent further visual loss, awareness can be spread regarding the risk factors of ARMD among the population, so that they don’t suffer from ARMD. Already existing visual loss can not be corrected due to irreversible changes; therefore, we can educate people to prevent ARMD.
