Effect of Music Therapy on Milk Expression in Mothers of Babies Admitted In NICU

Author: SALIL GUNDEWAR, BHAVANA LAKHKAR, MAHESH SHYAMRAO PAWAR
Abstract: Studies have shown that NICU admissions of the babies add to significant stress levels in mothers (1).It increases anxiety levels in mothers regarding health of the babies(1). Studies have also shown to have led to depression and negative feelings including anger amongst mothers (2). Stress and anxiety levels can be assessed using a PSS tool (a questionnaire) (03) and can be correlated within the salivary cortisol levels. (4), (5). Music therapy provides a calm and conducive state of mind for mothers which improves milk secretion, thereby increasing amount of milk secreted. (3) Objectives • To study stress levels in mothers of babies admitted to NICU with modified PSS questionnaire tool and salivary cortisol levels and correlating their values. • To measure milk secretion with and without Music therapy for 4 days Methodology Research design- Prospective cross-sectional observational study. Place of study-NICU, department of Pediatrics JNMC Wardha. Participants-Mothers of babies admitted to NICU. Inclusion criteria- • Mothers of babies admitted to NICU where baby is more than 3 days old. Exclusion criteria- • Mothers denying consent. • Mothers with K/C/O psychiatric disorders. • Mothers with structural anamolies of breast. Mothers fulfilling selection criteria will be included in the study after informed and written consent. Mothers will be subjected to modified PSS stress questionnaire tool. • Mother’s salivary cortisol levels will be evaluated next day at 8AM. • Raga bhairavi instrumental Music will be used for mother. • Sampling procedure- milk will be expressed using breast pump and manually both from day 3 of baby’s life. • Music therapy will be started 15 minutes before milk expression and will be continued throughout milk expression for 4 days amounting to total of 4 sessions each. Results: Amount of milk secretion with music therapy is expected to be more than that without music therapy Conclusion: Music therapy can increase milk secretion in mothers under stress
