Role of Charcoal as a limitation of a carbamazepine poisoning

Abstract: The study discussed the role of activated charcoal (AC) on treatment and prevention of carbamazepine (Tegretol) toxicity as drug used in treatment protocol of epilepsy (seizure). Either accidentally or suicidal condition lead to consumption high dose of carbamazepine, then elevated of serum carbamazepine level more than normal value (4-12) mg/l, that may develop to disasters & critical complications. The charcoal act as adsorptive material whereby taken it, orally as tablets or suspension the pharmacokinetic of drugs not digested, not absorption, no metabolism & execration in feces, by capturing the poison and prevent the absorption if taken in appropriate period and adequate dose according to age of patient. During a one-year 2018/2019, the research in Baghdad teaching hospital/ toxicities department center. Examine (4) patients with different age, gender, but share with same disease (epilepsy) and treatment (Tegretol), by monitoring the serum carbamazepine level at 0, 4, 6 hours a day 1 and day 5 then day 14 for each patient show whom received the charcoal ± gastric lavage have a good prognosis, otherwise if not treated with charcoal because of delay reach to hospital the patient have bad prognosis and more complication.
