Melanosis Coli Due to Herbal Traditional Laxative in a Chronic Constipation Patient: Are We Going to See More in the Future?

Author: G. UMAPARAN
Abstract: Melanosis Coli is a pathological change in the colonic mucosa resulting from the chronic exposure of ‘Anthraquinone’ which is usually found in the laxatives used to treat constipation. The presence of characteristic feature of pigmented colonic mucosa detected during colonoscopy is a diagnostic feature of Melanosis Coli. The cause of Melanosis Coli due to prolonged exposure to traditionally produced herbal remedy is rarely seen and to our knowledge there is no case of Melanosis Coli caused by traditional herbal laxative that has been reported so far. We are presenting a case of Melanosis Coli caused by a prolonged consumption of traditional herbal laxative produced by a traditional healer to treat chronic constipation in a middle age woman.
