Association between treatment needs of periodontal status and systemic diseases among 35-80-year-old adults attending a private dental college in Chennai - A Retrospective study

Abstract: Periodontitis is an irreversible disease of microbial origin resulting in destruction of alveolar structures . Recent evidence suggests that periodontitis may increase the risk of systemic disease and acts as a potential marker. The aim of the study is to establish the association between treatment needs of periodontal disease and systemic disease among the 35-80 year old adults attending a private college in chennai.This retrospective study included all CPITN index patients from 35- 80 years old who visited the particular time period. Data was collected from DIAS software used in the college. CPITN index was used to measure the CPI scores and treatment needs of individual indexed teeth. Descriptive statistics and chi square tests were used for statistical analysis In the study (N=84), 71.43% males and 28.57% females were present. 55.95% were from 35-50 years old and 44.05% from 51-80 years old. In the treatment needs,15.47% had no Treatment needs, 17.85% had Improvement of Personal oral hygiene, 39.28 % had Improvement of Personal oral hygiene and Scaling; 13.09% had Improvement of Personal oral hygiene and Root planing; 8.33% had Deep scaling and 5.95% had Root planning and complex surgical procedures. 15.47 % had systemic disease. In this case control study , no significant difference between treatment need of periodontal status and systemic disease (p<0.05)
