Assessment of age and gender distribution in root canal failure cases with two different tapered gutta percha obturation techniques

Author: SAHIL CHOUDHARI, SUBASH SHARMA S, JAIGANESH RAMAMURTHY
Abstract: The aim of our study was to assess the age and gender distribution in root canal failure cases with two different tapered gutta percha obturation techniques. Patients who had reported with symptoms post root canal treatment at a private institution in Chennai from June 2019 to March 2020 were recruited in our study. A total of 278 patients with root canal failures were reported. Data regarding age, gender and previous obturation technique (2% taper or 6% taper) were collected. Previous obturation technique was evaluated using intraoral RVG. The collected data was tabulated using Microsoft excel and analysed using SPSS. Differential (frequency distribution and percentage) and inferential (chi-square test) statistics were done. Our study included 278 patients with root canal failed teeth. In the age group below 30 years and 30 to 60 years, upper anterior teeth were most commonly involved in root canal failure and lower anterior teeth least commonly involved. In the age group above 60 years, lower posterior teeth were most commonly involved and upper anterior teeth were least commonly involved in root canal failure. In all age groups, 2% taper obturation was the most common. Lower posterior teeth were commonly involved in root canal failure among females and upper anterior teeth were commonly involved among males. Within the limitations of the study, the root canal failure teeth with 2% obturation taper had higher incidence of failure. Also, males between the age group of 30 to 60 years had higher incidence of endodontic failures.
