Amount of Sugar Content Present in Biscuits on Sale in Chennai And Its Correlation with Dental Caries Among Children-A Cross Sectional Study

Author: MAAJIDA M, DR.DEEPA GURUNATHAN
Abstract: The objective of the study is to investigate the sugar content present in various biscuits available in the local stores in Chennai and its correlation with dental caries. The data was collected from products packaging and nutrition labelling. For each biscuit the data collected will include the product name, pack weight, serving size, total sugars per 100gms as well as per suggested serving size. A questionnaire was used to obtain the information on the correlation with dental caries. The data was collected and tabulated in excel sheet. The data analysis was done using SPSS software by IBM. The average sugar content in biscuits is 28.5gms/100gms. There was a large variation in the sugar content present between different biscuit products. Among the 40 products, 35 products showed a high sugar content when compared to the normal recommended dose for children. 60% of the children consumed biscuits and 52% of them had dental caries. The children who consumed an increased number of biscuits showed high prevalence dental caries. Within the limitation of the study, it can be concluded that the sugar content present in biscuits were high and there can be a reduction in amount of sugar present and thus help in overall reduction of childhood obesity and dental caries.
