Morphometric analysis of olecranon fossa of humerus bone and its various applications

Author: B.DEVIKA , KARTHIK GANESH MOHANRAJ
Abstract: Olecranon fossa is a deep triangular depression in the posterior surface of humerus bone. It is located superior to trochlea in which the summit of olecranon is received during extension of the forearm. It is present in the distal end of humerus bone. It’s presence is important for ortho surgeons, radiologist. The aim of the study is to morphologically and morphometrically analyse the olecranon fossa of humerus bone. The study was conducted in the Department of Anatomy, Saveetha Dental College, Chennai. A total of 40 dry human humerus of unknown sex were collected and evaluated. These humerus were macroscopically observed with naked eye. In each humerus, the length, breadth and depth of olecranon fossa was observed, noted and photographed. The results obtained were tabulated, presented in percentages and graphically represented with mean ±SD. In the study, the mean distance between distal part of olecranon process and trochlea of humerus on the right side is 23.24±0.284. The mean distance between distal part of olecranon process and trochlea of humerus on the left side is 22.79±0.74. The mean distance between proximal edge of olecranon fossa and proximal part of trochlea of humerus on the right side is 26.72±0.89. The mean distance between proximal edge of olecranon fossa and proximal part of trochlea of humerus on the left side is 25.56±0.34. The study was conducted to analyse the olecranon fossa morphological and morphometrically. This data will be useful in providing knowledge on anatomical variation for orthopaedic surgeries and radiologists.
