Assessment of anxiety among dental students performing extraction and patients undergoing third molar extraction

Author: SHRUTHI DEVI.R, M.JEEVITHA, PREETHA.S, KARTHIK GANESH MOHANRAJ
Abstract: Dental anxiety develops from an early stage as a result of environmental and family influences. It can be defined as a specific response towards stress associated with dental situations. The most common factors causing anxiety are treatment involving anesthetic injections like in case of extraction and usage of drill for teeth removal. Others like trauma also cause dental anxiety. The anxiety due to third molar extraction is one of the most common problems relating to anxiety in the field of dentistry. Hence the study aims to know the level of anxiety among dental students performing third molar extraction and patients undergoing third molar extraction and compare the anxiety levels of students and patients before and after the procedure. For this, 50 patients from the outpatient department at a dental college hospital for extraction and 50 dental students who are going to perform extraction were asked to fill a VAS scale before and after the procedure. Then the mean VAS scores were analyzed and the results were obtained. The results showed that both the students and patients were more anxious before their first third molar extraction (p<0.005) and was found that students were significantly more anxious than patients due to post-operative complications and further complaints from patients while patients have less anxiety because once the procedure is finished they become physiologically and psychologically relieved. The VAS is a simple, effective, and reliable tool to analyze the patients and the student’s level of anxiety quantitatively before and after the dental treatment. This study highlights the need for better anxiety management strategies, helps dentists to analyze themselves, and give proper counseling to patients and training to students.
