Awareness On Risk Factors Of Ovarian Cancer Among Post Menopausal Women-A Survey

Abstract: Ovarian cancer refers to any cancerous growth that begins in the ovary. It is difficult to detect, especially in the early stages due to its vague symptoms. Thus, silent killer is a name that has been given to this cancer. Knowledge on the risk factors of ovarian cancer will help in early detection and better prognosis.The aim of this study is to evaluate the level of awareness on the risk factors of ovarian cancer among post menopausal women. A self-administered questionnaire was designed and consisted of questions regarding the awareness on various risk factors of ovarian cancer. The questionnaire was distributed through an online forum. The study population included 100 menopausal women belonging to age groups 40-70years.The questions were carefully studied and the corresponding answers were marked by the participants. The data were collected and statistically analyzed using SPSS software. The results show that the level of awareness on risk factors of ovarian cancer among post menopausal women was less.Majority of the participants were aware that age is a risk factor for ovarian cancer.The most recognised ovarian cancer risk factors among the participants were severe menstrual pain(53%), infertility(48%), hormone replacement therapy(43%) and the least recognised risk factors were usage of birth control pills(36%) and changes in bowel habits(28%).Within the limitations of this study it can be concluded that the overall low level of awareness on risk factors of ovarian cancer among post menopausal women.
