Curcuma Longa and Pineapple Extract Paste in the management of Alveolar Osteitis: An Experimental study

Author: R RAJASHRI, SANTHOSH KUMAR M.P
Abstract: Dry socket, also termed as fibrinolytic osteitis or alveolar osteitis, is a complication of tooth extraction. Zinc oxide-eugenol dressing is widely used in the management of dry socket. Eugenol in wound dressing acts as an antibacterial and analgesic agent but known to cause hypersensitivity reaction and allergies. Curcuma longa rhizome extract could perform as a substitute of eugenol as its active compounds have an anti-inflammation, antioxidant, anticancer, and antibacterial properties. This study aims at studying the effect of Curcuma longa and pineapple extract wound dressing in dry socket. The study was conducted in the department of oral and maxillofacial surgery of Saveetha dental college, Chennai. 40 patients with dry socket were selected from the outpatient department of oral and maxillofacial surgery. The diagnosis of dry socket was made clinically. Curcuma longa and pineapple extract dressing was given in the study group and zinc oxide eugenol dressing in the control group and outcome was observed and measured for incidence and intensity of dry socket in each group and evaluated by scores. Pearson’s chi square test was done to assess association between categorical variables. Statistical analysis was done considering p < 0.05, as statistically significant. In this study there was significant reduction in pain, inflammation and discomfort after turmeric pineapple extract dressing and ZOE dressing. Wound healing was seen faster in the study group than the control group. There was no side effect due to turmeric and pineapple extracts dressing. It can be concluded from our study that the wound dressing combination of Curcuma longa extract and pineapple extract can increase the number of neovascular beds during the wound healing process more than zinc oxide eugenol dressing. Thus, the combination of Curcuma longa extract and pineapple extract could be considered as an alternative to zinc oxide eugenol wound dressing for dry sockets.
