Burden Among the Wives of Alcoholics in Selected Rehabilitation Center

Author: , SATISH KUMAR U. PATIL, SHIVAJI.H.PAWAR
Abstract: Background: Globally, research indicates that wives of alcoholics experience psychological burden. However, there is a dearth of studies, especially on wives of alcoholics in India. Thus, this study was aimed at assessing the severity of burden among the wives of alcoholics at a rehabilitation center in Maharashtra, Southern India. Materials and Methods: This prospective, cross-sectional study included 50 wives who have been living with an alcoholic spouse for at least 2 years. A validated questionnaire was used to collect demographic and respondent burden data. All participants were required to answer a 2-section questionnaire (Section 1: Socio-demographics; Section 2: burden assessment scale [BAS]). Software R version 3.6.0. was employed to analyze the data. Results: Majority of the subjects (64.5%) were in the age group of 28-34 years with a mean age of 37.54±1.8 years. Most alcoholic husbands had 6-10 years’ history of alcohol consumption (40%) and most of them had been admitted for the first time in a de-addiction center (48%). Wives of most of the alcoholics had a severe level of burden (62%). The mean BAS score was 82.04±10.3 with minimum and maximum scores of 55 and 102, respectively. The top reasons for a severe level of burden were reported to be mental and physical health (72%) and behavior of the spouse (64%). Statistically, no significant association was found between the burden among the wives of alcoholics and socio-demographic variables (P>0.05). Conclusions: A severe level of burden was observed in the wives of majority of the alcoholics. Hence, governance plans must be developed aiming at not only alcoholic patients but also their wives so as to reduce the burden.
