Evaluation of Antioxidant and Anti-Cholesterol Potential of Aqueous Cladode Extract of Opuntia Dillenii- An In Vitro Study

Author: S SNEKA, GAYATHRI R, V VISHNU PRIYA
Abstract: Opuntia dillenii is also called as cactus fruits and cladodes. It belongs to the Cactaceae family and largely seen in desert areas .Opuntia dillenii has been used as a traditional folk medicine and also as food resources for centuries. It mainly grows in the desert and arid region and thus has a good economic potential.Anti Cholesterol potential is the tendency of the drug to reduce the level of cholesterol. Antioxidants are chemicals that interact and neutralise free radicals thus preventing oxidative damage. The study aims to evaluate the antioxidant and anti cholesterol potential of aqueous extract of opuntia dillenii. Opuntia dillenii plant was purchased from a nursery in Chennai. Cladode was carefully removed, washed with care and crushed to prepare a 80% aqueous extract. In Vitro antioxidant ( DPPH , NO scavenging) and anti cholesterol activity of the aqueous cladode extract of Opuntia dillenii was evaluated. The data obtained from the study depicts that the herb possesses both antioxidant and anti cholesterol activity. The results were statistically analysed. The crude aqueous cladode extract of Opuntia dillenii was proved to possess a good level of antioxidant and anticholesterol activity in this study. Thus the extract can scavenge the free radical accumulation and prevent early onset of cardiovascular related disorders.
