Subjective Perception and Evaluation of Neurosensory Disturbance of The Lower Lip After Genioplasty Procedures

Abstract: The aim of this study was to find out the incidence and assess the sensory changes of the lower lip after genioplasty when done either as an isolated procedure or in combination with any other osteotomies. Sixteen patients who underwent genioplasty either as an isolated procedure or in combination with any other osteotomies, were asked to score their perception of numbness of the lower lip between 0–10 (0 = normal sensation; 10 = complete loss of sensation/total numbness) one day postoperatively and then at 3 months, 6 months, and one year. Neurosensory tests were performed as well after a year postoperatively to assess any abnormal feeling of the lower lip. The incidence of any neurosensory disturbance was documented by collecting data on score sheets and by regular contact on the telephone. Out of the 16 patients operated, 6 (37.5%) were males and 10 (62.5%) were females. Four (12.5%) out of the 32 sides reported feeling normal on postoperative day one, 23 (71.88%) out of 32 sides reported feeling normal after 6 months postoperatively and 26 (81.3%) out of 32 sides reported feeling normal after 1 year postoperatively. Neurosensory tests revealed that 12.5% of the mental nerves in patients who had had isolated genioplasties showed altered sensation of the lower lip. Eighteen percent of the operated subjects had long lasting neurosensory disturbance. However, the majority of the patients (81%) were satisfied with the result of the operation despite sensory disturbances of some degree which shows that neurosensory disturbance is not the main determining factor of patient satisfaction and seems outweighed by information and results of function and aesthetics given preoperatively.
