Effects of Different Body Position on Measuring Blood Pressure Among Healthy Individuals

Author: B.DEVIKA , R.GAYATRI DEVI, A.JOTHI PRIYA
Abstract: Blood pressure is the force that moves blood through the circulatory system. It is an important force because oxygen and nutrients would not be pushed around the circulatory system to nourish tissues and organs without blood pressure. Even Though much research was carried out in the measurement of blood pressure, very limited study was found with respect to the effect of body position on blood pressure among healthy individuals. So the aim of the present study was to determine the effect of different body position on BP among healthy individuals. A total of 100 healthy individuals were randomly selected for this study. Blood pressure was recorded by an electronic sphygmomanometer. In all subjects, the blood pressure was measured in sitting, standing, supine, left pronation and right pronation posture on the left arm. Mean ± standard deviation of the observation for all the parameters were calculated and graphically represented. The blood pressure in left pronation position (114.32±15.60) is more than right pronation (98.62±15.00) in systolic BP. The blood pressure in left pronation (75.90±11.74) is more than right pronation (67.04±11.95) in diastole. The blood pressure in supine position is more in systole (111.32 ± 16.17) and in sitting position is more in systole (106.19 ± 15.14). When assessing blood pressure it is important to take the position of the patient into consideration. Even though left pronation position could be used to assess BP, it may not be convenient for the patient. Hence sitting position with the arm in the right atrial level can be used.
