Knowledge, Prevalence and Behavior Of Binge Eating Upon Stress and Its Impact on Body Mass Index in Adolescent Population

Author: A.SHIVAPRIYARAJE , KARTHIK GANESH MOHANRAJ
Abstract: Binge eating is the consumption of large quantities of food in a short period of time, typically as part of an eating disorder. Binge eating behavior is very common among the population especially among adolescents and young adults. This behaviour seems to be more often seen when the people are stressed and depressed in their daily life. Depression and binge eating are strongly linked in terms of psychology and character. Apart from stressful conditions binge eaters are usually obese to some extent. Many binge eaters are either depressed or have been before; others may have trouble with impulse control and managing and expressing their feelings. Low self-esteem, loneliness, and body dissatisfaction may also contribute to binge eating. This cross sectional study was conducted among 150 adolescent people from the Chennai population. Standard self-structured questionnaire of 15 questions was framed and responses were collected in an online survey portal and the results were obtained as responses were analyzed. The data are represented in pie charts. The percentages of binge eaters are 49.6% and non-binge eaters were 50.4%. The overall awareness of the prevalence of binge eating and its effects reported positive answers. From the current study it is evident that there may be a relation between binge eating behavior during stress and BMI.
