Evaluation of periodontal health status of teeth with prosthetic crowns - a retrospective cohort study

Author: KEERTHANA BALAJI, MURUGAN THAMARAISELVAN, PRADEEP D
Abstract: There are several iatrogenic factors that contribute to plaque induced periodontal diseases, improper prosthetic restoration is one among these iatrogenic factors that initiate periodontal disease either favouring plaque accumulation or violation of biological width. The main purpose of this study was to evaluate the periodontal health status around teeth with prosthetic crowns. This study was designed as a retrospective cohort study, conducted among patients who reported to the university dental hospital. Subjects above 18 years of age,who underwent prosthetic rehabilitation at least 6 months before were included in this study. Smokers and medically compromised patients were excluded from this study. Data was collected and analysed using IBM SPSS Statistical Analyzer(23.0 version). The result of this study showed that 42.86% of the population reported with periodontitis, 39.68% with gingivitis and 17.46% of patients had clinically healthy gingiva. The prevalence of periodontitis was found to be higher in 41-60 years of age, older prosthesis, subgingival restorative margins. Within the limits of the study, it can be concluded that increased prevalence of periodontitis was found in patients with fixed prosthesis and individual’s age, duration of prosthesis and location of restorative margin placement play an important role in influencing periodontal health status.
