Author: WESTEOUS DOMINIC PEREIRA, DHANRAJ GNAPATHY, SURENDAR S
Abstract: Root stumps refers to the partial root structure that remains in the jaw. Root stumps can be seen both in edentulous and edentulous patients as a preventive measure to preserve the alveolar ridge resorption. Root stumps are generally not associated with any symptoms or pathology, several studies have been conducted and results have shown that the majority of retained root fragments cause no harm to patients and are found in radiographic findings and histological studies that the healing of extraction sockets in the presence of fractured root fragments. A retrospective cross sectional study was conducted using the patient record from the Department of Prostho, Saveetha Dental College from June 2019 to march 2020. The data of patients who underwent extraction above the age of 55years old was collected and tabulated. Root stumps are generally not associated with any symptoms or pathology several studies have been conducted and results have shown that the majority of retained root fragments cause no harm to patients and are found in radiographic findings and histological studies that the healing of extraction sockets in the presence of fractured root fragments. The patients were distributed as 10-15 years, 15-20years & 20-25years respectively. Females patients showed a higher incidence in the cases of root stumps 54.2% (n=13) while male patients were 45.8% (n=11). There was a higher prevalence of female patients in the age group 15-20years n=4 while the males were n=2. the age group 20-25 shows higher incidence of males n= 6 while females were n=3. Age group 20-25 years showed an increase in the number of females n= 6, when compared to the males n=3. The number of root stumps was seen to be higher in Upper arch 50% while the lower arch had 25%. 25% of the patients showed incidence of root stumps in both the arch. Furthermore extensive research is needed to assess the prevalence of root stumps among various populations and to improve the overall dental health of the population.
