Author: ZAHRA ISMAIL ABDEL-HUSSEIN, LUBNA DHARI MOHAMMED, MUSTAFA SALAH HASAN
Abstract: Artemisia annua is a medicinal plant used extensively in Asia. This study was conducted to evaluate the therapeutic effect of Artemisia annua against lead toxicity in rats. Forty male rats were divided into 4 groups, G1 as control negative, G2 given lead acetate at 15 mg/ kg per day for 15 days, G3 treated with 100 mg/ml b.w.t of Artemisia annua extract for 2 weeks, G4 given lead acetate at 15 mg/ kg per day for 15 days, then treated with 100 mg/ml b.w.t of Artemisia annua extract for 2 weeks. Livers were collected from all groups for histological study. The results showed normal histology of the liver in G1&G3, Whereas, G2 displayed sinusoidal dilation and cytoplasmic vacuolation with focal necrosis and sinusoidal congestion. G4 demonstrated natural inflammatory infiltration of hepatocytes and sinusoids. In conclusion, Artemisia annua can be used for the treatment of liver damage induced by lead toxicity
