Haematinc Activity of Ayabirungarajakarpam in Phenyl Hydrazine Induced Experimental Anaemic Rats

Author: NAGALINGAM VARNAKULEDRAN, VEERIAH ELANGO
Abstract: Anaemia occurs when the total number of erythrocytes and or amount of haemoglobin is reduced below the normal values of 130g/l in male and female 120g/l. The aim of this study was to investigate increase of hemoglobin (Hb) levels in ratmodel with IDA. Thirty six healthy young adult albinowistar rats (Rattusnorvegicus Sp.) weighing 120 -160 were used in this study. The protocol was arrived at after carrying pilot study on phenyl hydrazine induced anaemia in order to observe the significance occurrence of anaemia and any untoward effect. The group I contain n=6 were kept as normal control without inducing anaemia while other 30 rats were made anemic by intra peritoneal phenyl hydrazine 40mg/kg.b.w and kept for 24h before starting the protocol. Phenyl hydrazine treated rats were randomlydivided in to five groups (n=6) each contain six animals, the Group II was disease control and received distil water. Group III wasvehicle controlreceived lime juice. TheIVGroup Vand VIwere treated groups received ABK as 50,100,200 mg/kg b.w respectively as lower dose, therapeutic dose and higher dosetested group. The result showed significant improvement of Hb and serum ferritin levels after 28 days of treatment with ABK,.Hence it is concluded that ABK havebest hematinic activitywhich may be attributed to their phytochemicals and minerals contents, thus significant anti-anemic activity as shown in PHZ-induced anemiaexperimental rat model indicating the use of ABK for the treatment of anemia
