Evaluation of Antioxidant, Antibacterial and Cytotoxic Activity of a Polyherbal Formulation, Slimkar 19b

Author: PRABHUPRASAD PADUCHURI, DR PHILOMENA GEORGE
Abstract: Aim: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the antioxidant, and antibacterial activity of a polyherbal formulation, Slimkar 19b. Study was also undertaken to assess the cytotoxicity in 3T3L1 cell lines. Methodology: We amply determined the antioxidant activity of the slimkar19b with standard assays viz, 2,2'-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS), Ferric Reducing Antioxidant Power (FRAP) and 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH). Antibacterial activity of slimkar19b was assessed against perilous pathogens by resazurin assay. The cytotoxicity of formulation was checked by MTT assay against 3T3L1 cell lines. Results: The slimkar19b IC50 value of DPPH, ABTS and FRAP assay was found to be 393.64±10.2µg/mL, 195.77±7.34µg/mL and 82.97±4.2mg/mL respectively. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values against test organisms Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus mutans, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Salmonella typhi were found to be 500µg/mL, 125µg/mL, 500µg/mL, 1000µg/mL, 1000µg/mL and 1000µg/mL respectively. The revealed data showed that Slimkar19b was toxic to 3T3L1 Cell Lines at 649.76±24.20 µg/mL (IC50) concentration. Interpretation: The study has shown the antioxidant and antibacterial potential of Slimkar19b, a polyherbal formulation.
