Nootropic Activity Of Quercus Infectorial(Galls)In Albino Mice Using Reversible And Irreversible Amnesia Models.

Abstract: A complex mixture of phenolic acid glycosides, Quercus infectoria galls (QI) produces 50-70 percent tannin concentration, mainly gallotannic acid. Traditionally, QI for neurological and anti-oxidant activity has been claimed. The purpose of this research is to use reversible and permanent models of amnesia to determine the nootropic function of Quercus infectoria (galls) in albino mice. To research anti-amnesic behavior in reversible and tannin-rich ethylacetate fraction, hydroalcoholic extract and tannin-rich ethylacetate fraction were used. Amnesic induction in the reversible and irreversible model caused by transcranial application of Lignocaine 2 percent gel and Scopolamine 0.4 mg/kg intraperitoneal route respectively. HEQI 400mg/kg and 200 mg/kg and EAF 100 mg/kg medication were administered for 8 days and behavioral parameters were measured. The same animals were used for an irreversible model after a 30-day washout cycle. Latency transition (Elevated plus maze), Test of Object Recognition (Y-maze) , Escape latency (Morris water maze), Step down latency (studied passive avoidance test). QI extract ethyl acetate fraction (EAF) showed powerful antiamnesic effect through behavioral parameters as well as enzyme inhibitory effect in both amnesia models. Therefore, the extract of Quercus infectoria galls may be useful in the treatment of amnesia associated with Alzheimer's disease.
