Nucleotide-Binding Oligomerization Domain-Like Receptors (Nlrs): Molecular Sensors in Periodontitis

Author: ABIRAMI NAYAKI RAO. P, JAIDEEP MAHENDRA, MDS, PHD, ANILKUMAR KANAKAMEDALA, MDS, SRUTHI SRINIVASAN, AMBALAVANAN NAMASIVAYAM, MDS
Abstract: Pathological process of periodontal disease involves various interactions linking oral microbiota and innate immunity. Innate immune system functions as a frontline defense in our body against various microbial interactions through their immune receptors. These receptors recognize the pathogen or microbe and actively take part in induction and elaboration of periodontal disease. Inflammasomes are immune receptors that form multimeric protein complexes. The complexes formed activate caspases, which leads to release of pro-inflammatory cytokines that play a vital role in periodontal destruction. Molecular sensing of inflammasome is considered as promising biomarkers of inflammation in periodontal disease. Hence, this review focuses on the cellular and molecular potential of the inflammasomes which paves way in the era of future periodontal research.
