Evaluation Of Antidiabetic Activity Hydroalcoholic Extract Of Urochloaramosa Seeds In Streptozotocin-Induced Diabetic Rats

Author: PULIGOTI. PANDU, A.NARENDRA BABU
Abstract: The present study aims to investigate the hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic effect of ethanolic extract of seeds of Urochloaramosa (EESUR) in the Streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rat model. A total of thirty male Wistar Albino rats were used and it randomly distributed into five groups (n=6) which are Group I:untreated normal rats, Group II:untreated diabetic rats, Group III: diabetic rats with low dose of EESUR 300 mg/kg , Group IV:diabetic rats treated with high dose of EESUR 600 mg/kg and Group V:diabetic rats treated with Glibenclamide. In-vivo diabetic model were induced with Streptozocin via intra peritoneal injection at the dose of 50 mg/kg. Body weight and FBG (fasting blood glucose) level of diabetic rats were assessed every three days. Blood was collected via retro orbital puncture at day 42 after induction of treatment. The biochemical parameters such as total cholesterol, LDL and HDL cholesterol were measured. In addition the markers of liver and kidney, such as glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase, glutamic pyruvic transaminase, alkaline phosphatase, serum creatinine, total protein, albumin and urea levels were determined with biological Auto Analyzer and Histo-pathological studies were conducted on pancreas. All treatment groups with EESUR decreased blood glucose levels compared to the negative control (P<0.05). The dose of 600mg/kg (group IV) body weight provided higher activity than the 300 mg/kg (group III). In addition it also significantly reduced the total cholesterol, LDL and showed a significant increase in HDL cholesterol with significant improvement in liver. In conclusion, ethanolic seed extract of Urochloaramosa provides an anti diabetic effect with a protective and repairing effect towards Islets of langerhans.
