A Brief Review on Recrystallization of Clinically Important Drugs

Author: , CHALUVARAJU K C, ADITI PRASAD, SHARON ESTHER SAMUEL, GAGANA S
Abstract: Recrystallization is a technique used to purify chemicals, pharmaceuticals, active pharmaceutical ingredients, drugs by removing impurities likely to be present in them. When a compound containing impurity is dissolved in a suitable solvent, either the desired compound or impurity can be precipitated out, leaving the other behind. In this process, crystal formation takes place as the compound precipitates out. The most typical process in the purification of the drug is to remove the impurities from them for their clinical uses. Recrystallization is one of the several methods of purification of drugs that may be attempted. This review aims at analysing the different solvents used for the recrystallization of drugs and the difference in properties of recrystallized drugs based on the solvent used. It also emphasizes the fact that usage of specific solvents not only produces crystals of higher purity but also results in the formation of crystals with improved aqueous solubility, dissolution rate, therapeutic activity etc.,
