Evaluation the antibacterial and anti biofilm formation of R. officinalis essential oil against MDR clinically isolated bacteria

Author: BASEM BATTAH, LAMA SHBIBE, ANAS RAJAB, CHADI SOUKKARIEH
Abstract: The increasing spread of multi-drug resistant bacteria with the frequent failure in infection treatment makes finding alternative treatment strategies an urgent need. The biofilm formation is one of the biochemical mechanism in developing bacterial resistance. In this study we evaluated the antibacterial activity and antibiofilm formation of R. officinalis essential oil being extracted from the aerial parts of the plants. The antibacterial activity was determined by calculating the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) against multidrug resistant strains(Pseudomonsa aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumonia, Streptococcus pneumonia) which are clinically isolated from blood infection and were (12.5, 6.25, 12.5µl/ml) respectively. The biofilm formation was quantified using a microtiter plate. The essential oil at MIC concentrations was able to reduce the biofilm mass formed by (Pseudomonsa aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumonia, Streptococcus pneumonia) up to (50%, 48%, 69%) respectively. The obtained results demonstrated a significant antibacterial effect of R. officinalis essential oil against clinically resistant strains and suggested it as a potent agent in biofilm prevention. More studies are needed in order to evaluate the activity against other microorganism, evaluating its cytotoxicity and determination of the effective dose in in vivo model.
