A Study on Iron Deficiency Anemia in Relation to Prevalence, Risk Factors and Management among Pregnant Women in a Tertiary Care Hospital

Author: ATHULYA ABRAHAM, HARSHA CK, LALRINFELI PACHUAU, BEULAH MILTON
Abstract: Background:Gestational anemia is a common condition prevailing throughout the world despite being preventable and easily diagnosable. Objective: This study was intended to determine the prevalence, possible risk factors, and management of anemia. Methodology:A prospective observational study was conductedon 196 pregnant women at MVJ Medical College and Research Hospital between February 2022 and August 2022. Case report forms and laboratory investigations were used to confirm the diagnosis and medications. Iron deficiency anemia was classified into mild, moderate, and severe anemia in accordance with WHO criteria. Results And Conclusion: Among the sample of patients analysed,122 subjects (62.24%) had mild anemia, 49 (25%) had moderate anemia, and 25 (12.76%) had severe anemia. Using Fisher’stest, it was found that there is an association between folic acid tablets consumption adherence and severity all through 1st trimester (p-value of 0.0489 at 95%CI) and a correlation between severity and intake of iron and calcium capsules during 2nd trimester (p-value 0.0009 at 95%CI). Major risk elements observed in the study were hypothyroidism, gestational diabetes mellitus, vaginal candidiasis, and hyperemesis gravidarum. Patients received oral medications, blood transfusion, and intravenous iron injections consistent with the severity of their anemia. Major associated complications were low birth weight, pre-eclampsia, and threatened preterm. Thus, it is important to monitor the hemoglobin levels to prevent unfortunate outcomes for both the mother and fetus
