The use of multivitamin supplements has become increasingly prevalent worldwide, driven by health awareness and the need to address nutritional deficiencies. This study analyses various multivitamin supplements available in the Indian market, examining their composition, price, and compliance with Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA). The study utilized scatter sampling to collect data from pharmaceutical shops and online platforms, focusing on multivitamin products with two or more vitamins and minerals. Single-vitamin supplements and formulations specific to children and pregnant women were excluded. Findings reveal significant variations in vitamin dosages, with branded supplements often falling short of RDA for critical vitamins such as B6 and D. Comparatively, generic multivitamins provided through the Janaushidhi program offered higher vitamin content at a fraction of the cost but lacked minerals. The study highlights the need for rational use of multivitamins, considering discrepancies between labelled content and actual bioavailability. It emphasizes the role of multivitamins in populations with limited access to varied diets but cautions against their unsupervised use due to potential risks associated with excessive intake. Further research and regulation are recommended to ensure quality and efficacy in multivitamin supplementation.
