Abstract: Medicinal plants and their traditional uses are the most economic and low side effective method of choice for the treatment of many diseases and ailments for the worldwide. Medicinal plants having antilithiatic property are a boon to the people. Among such plants Cissus adnata Roxb is one.The inhibitory effect of the aqueous extract of the leaves of Cissus adnata Roxb and its isolated compounds on the formation of calcium phosphate and calcium oxalate stones in urinary milieu were studied through inhibition experiment. The inhibitory effects were presented as the percentage of inhibition or the degree of inhibition as compared to blank urine. It was found that the percentage and the degree of inhibition for the plant was maximum at 150mg/100ml and decreased as further increase of concentration. The inhibition in stone formation is due to its capacity of increasing the solubility product of the constituents, which could contribute to the antilithiatic property of the extract. The results obtained also showed that the plant and its isolated compounds had more inhibitory effect on calcium oxalate stone formation than calcium phosphate crystal formation. The findings further give support the effectiveness of Cissus adnata against the urolithiatic cases as used in the folk medicine.
