The effectiveness of group counseling based mindfulness on marital stress in women of reproductive age: A clinical trial

Abstract: Marital stress is an integral part of common life and affects marital relationships. Marital stress, in addition to having a negative impact on the health of individuals, causes significant disturbances in couples' marital and sexual relationships. Several evidences suggest the importance of reducing stress in strengthening family relationships and improving its members’ health.This study aims at investigating effectiveness of group counseling mindfulness-based cognitive therapyon marital stressin women being in reproductive age.This is a controlled randomized study with pre-test, post-test methodology and andone-month follow-up tests which was carried out on fifty women being in reproductive age in Yazd. At first, all subjects completed Stockholm marital stress and demographic questionnaire. After randomization, the intervention group (25 persons), spent 8 sessions of Mindfulness intervention for 90 minutes weekly. During this period, the control group did not receive any intervention. After completing eight sessions and after a month, all participants in the intervention and control group completed marital stress questionnaire again. Data analysis was performed using SPSS 16 and p<0.001.The mean and standard deviation of marital stress scores in the intervention group at the beginning of the study and the week of the 8 intervention and follow up phases were 66/50?14/84 ; 55/04?14/07 and 56.65?15.14, respectively. Also, these scores in the control group were 59.04?16.84 and 64.25?15.66 and 66.88?16.46 .The results show that group counseling mindfulness-based cognitive therapy has a meaningful effect on marital stress on women of reproductive age.Mindfulness counseling significantly reduces marital stress in women and helps to increase the mental health of women and the family.
