Background: Cancer is defined as the uncontrollable growth of cells that invade and cause damage to surrounding tissue. Oral cancers are the sixth most frequent cancer with a high mortality rate. Oral squamous cell carcinoma accounts[OSCC] for more than 90% of all oral cancers. Technology that highlights potentially malignant disorders from oral cancer will aid clinicians in early diagnosis of these conditions. The aim of this study is to assess the awareness of Visually Enhance Lesion Scope [VELSCOPE] in the detection of malignant disorders among dental students.
Materials and methods: A descriptive cross sectional survey was conducted among 110 dental students through a self administered questionnaire from march to april 2020. The responses were collected, tabulated in excel sheet and analysed using SPSS software. Chi square test was used to analyze the level of knowledge on velscope and different levels of education of dental students with statistical significance of p < 0.05.
Results: 72.7% of the participants were aware about velscope. 75.5% of the participants believe that the velscope can be used for the early detection of malignancies
Conclusion: Dental students had good knowledge on the use of velscope as a diagnostic tool for potentially malignant disorders and oral cancer.
