Knowledge and Awareness About Ridge Augmentation Among Dental Undergraduates

Author: AISHWARYA.S , DHANRAJ GANAPATHY
Abstract: A localized alveolar ridge augmentation after tooth extraction, or "ridge augmentation," involves placing bone graft directly into the empty socket where a tooth's roots used to be, to help create the natural shape of the gums and jaw that may have been lost following tooth extraction. Rehabilitation of missing teeth with dental implant-supported restorations has become a predictable treatment option in dentistry. The stability of hard and soft tissues around the implant is fundamental for long-term success. However, due to factors such as trauma, oncologic diseases, and missing teeth, vertical and horizontal bone loss is expected, and the available bone may not be suitable for optimum implant placement. The aim of this study is asses the awareness about the ridge procedure among dental undergraduates A self structured questionnaire was designed and consisted of questions regarding the awareness on ridge augmentation procedure The questionnaire was distributed through an online form. The study population included 100 dental undergraduates. The questions were carefully studied and the corresponding answers were marked by the participants. The data were collected and statistically analyzed using SPSS software. 46% of the participants were aware about the ridge augmentation procedure and 52% of the students were aware about its importance during the immediate implant placements. In an overall note, it is evident that dental undergraduates were aware about the ridge augmentation procedure but they were not completely aware about their risk factors.
