Assessing Peri- Implantitis Using Direct Digital Imaging

Author: MANIVASAGAM DEEPIGAA, MUTHUKRISHNAN ARVIND
Abstract: Peri-implantitis is known as biofilm related infection of hard and soft tissues surrounding dental implants. Clinical symptoms are bleeding on probing, pus discharge, swelling, redness of soft tissue and pain on palpation. Intraoral periapical radiograph is a standard method for evaluation of bone changes in peri-implantitis. Retrospective study was conducted at the implant department of Saveetha Dental College and Hospitals. 150 peri apical radiographs were evaluated for bone loss and was classified according to Ding et al classification.Male was found to be more predominant (n=79) 56.03% and female (n=62%) 43.97%. Smoking habit was present in (n=74) 52.48% and absent in (n=67) 47.52%. Type-3 (n=89) 57.97% were most observed followed by type-2(n=33) 21.43% and type-1 (n=23) 14.94%. The least common ones were type-4(n=7) 4.5% and type-5( n=2) 1.299%. Male gender and smoking habits increases the risk of peri-implant bone loss and the type of bone defect influences the treatment of peri-implantitis. Thus early detection and characterisation of bone loss can be determined by Ding et al classification.
