Evaluation of Antihyperlipidaemic Activity of Methanol Extract of Persicaria Hydropiper: A In Vivo Appraisal

Author: POOJA KAMRA, MAHAVEER SINGH, HARDARSHAN SINGH LAMBA, BIRENDRA SRIVASTAVA
Abstract: The present study emphases on the lipid lowering potential of methanolic whole plant extract of Persicaria hydropiper in high fat diet induced hyperlipidaemia. Hyperlipidaemia was induced in rats by oral administration of high fat diet for six weeks. The extract was thereafter administered at two different doses of 200mg/kg and 400mg/kg body weight for next six weeks to hyperlipidaemic rats. Atorvastatin was used as a reference standard. The extract revealed anti-hyperlipidaemic activity in dose dependent manner. The dose of 400mg/kg exhibited maximum antihyperlipidemic efficiency as evident from various evaluation parameters including total cholesterol, LDL-C, VLDL-C, HDL-C, atherogenic index which was comparable to the standard drug Atorvastatin respectively. These findings support the use of the extract as an adjuvant with existing therapy for treatment of hyperlipidaemia.
