Postoperative Complications of Extraction

Author: SAI SANDHYA.T, DR.MAHATHI NERALLA
Abstract: Tooth extraction is the last option for any practising Dentist since its conservation all the way now, not to mention replacement. A decrease in the number of teeth may result in poor dietary habits and deterioration in quality of life. The number of extracted teeth can serve as an indicator of socioeconomic status and may be the result of poor oral hygiene. Extraction of permanent teeth is performed for several reasons like Dental caries, periodontal diseases, orthodontic purposes, impacted teeth , failed dental treatment , prosthetic reasons and other reasons. The aim of the present study is to check the prevalence of postoperative complications of extraction when done in a teaching hospital. The study was carried out in Saveetha Dental College in South India. Patient data was collected with the help of a software known as DIAS (Dental information archiving software). The number of patients who came for review after extraction were calculated and patients who had postoperative complications were taken for the study. In the present study , out of 554 patients who came for review, 482 patients did not complain of any postoperative complications whereas the remaining 72 reported few postoperative complications. Some of the complications faced by them were pain, swelling and fracture of maxillary tuberosity. It is important for a practicing Dentist to know about the postoperative complications of extraction and should be able to manage them competently.
