Evaluation of quality of life and patient satisfaction between denture wearers using conventional followed by Bio functional Prosthetic System (BPS) dentures

Author: HARSH KASABWALA, DR SHUBHABRATA MAITI, DR KIRAN KUMAR
Abstract: Rapidly providing high-quality complete dentures has become one of the most important aspects of removable denture prosthesis. Novel procedures and methods are being developed in order to provide a better and a much more efficient method of fabricating complete as compared to the techniques conventionally used. Newer methods have a more convenient method of recording impressions, jaw relations and also seem to have better esthetic outcomes. This helps in improving the quality of life of edentulous patients and elevates their satisfaction levels. This study aims at evaluating the quality of life and patient satisfaction between denture wearers using conventional followed by BPS dentures. This study was designed as a retrospective study. Sample size of 20 patients was selected. These patients who were initially provided with conventionally fabricated complete dentures followed by BPS complete dentures were selected for this study. The database of 86000 patient records were analysed and patient information was collected. Study data was collected via telephonic conversation. The patients were asked to report their satisfaction levels and quality of life on a VAS scale and in an abbreviated version of the Oral Health-Related Quality of Life questionnaire, specifically designed for edentulous patients (Oral Health Impact Profile for edentulous subjects [OHIP-EDENT]) respectively. The patients were asked as to which denture gave them more satisfaction and the patient satisfaction levels were recorded on a VAS scale. The statistical analysis was done using SPSS version 20 software. P value was obtained by applying Wilcoxon signed rank test .After statistical analysis the OHIP-EDENT scores and the patient satisfaction levels for BPS complete dentures were significantly higher as compared to that of conventional dentures. Almost all the patients preferred to have the BPS dentures on a long term basis due to their improved retention, esthetics, and chewing efficiency.Within the limitations of the study, the BPS complete dentures had a superior patient satisfaction and better quality of life as compared to conventional denture prosthesis.
