Influence of Periodontal Instrumentation In Microbial Colonization Around Fixed Prosthesis

Abstract: The role of the microflora in the oral cavity is comlex and their behaviour is influenced by several factors, within the oral cavity varying levels of symbiotism, commensalism, and parasitic behaviour exists and it is expressed by the microflora to the host. Human oral microbiome database (HOMD) is the first curated description of human associated microbiome and provides tools for use in understanding the role of microbiome in health and disease. Many authors studied the microbial activities of subgingivally placed all ceramic retainers which demonstrated a statistically significant, progressive increase in microbial colonisation in the abutment teeth over ranging time intervals of 1 week, 1 month and 2 months respectively and this may affect periodontal health of abutment teeth, by the collection of microbes and study of microbes with the help of microscope which shows difference in the microbial counts. To maintain the microbial activity and keep it in a healthy state the periodontal treatments will be required, around natural teeth and the restorations. A few studies state that the continuity of periodontal instrumentation causes bleeding and increases in microbial colonisation. In classic bacterial infection the diversity of the microbiota decreases as the disease develops; in most cases of the periodontitis, however the diversity of the flora increases. But with the continuous use of the periodontal instruments the microbial activity will be altered which can be both favourable or unfavourable.The review signifies the influence of periodontal instrumentation in microbial colonisation and its effect on restorative surfaces around fixed prosthesis.
