Pharmacognostical profiling and Anthelmintic activity of three market formulations and in-house formulated Manibhadra Yoga (AFI): A Polyherbal Ayurvedic Formulation

Author: GULZAR ALAM, ARUN KUMAR MISHRA
Abstract: Manibhadra yoga polyherbal formulation (MYPF) is an official classical polyherbal formulation, mentioned in Ayurvedic Formulary of India. It is commonly indicated in skin’s diseases, abdomen’s problems, splenic disease, worm’s infestation and respiratory diseases. The present experimental work established pharmacognostical standardization of each ingredient of MYPF and formulations. Anthelmintic study was also performed to evaluate the potential of MYPF in worm’s infestation. Organoleptic characterization of each herb, used in formulation, as raw form, was successfully done. Microcopy of the powder of each herb, Embelia ribes (ER), Emblica officinalis (EO), Terminalia chebula (TC) and Operculina turpethum (OT) and was performed and microphotographs were taken with digital camera. Pharmacognostical study of in-house formulated MYPF and three marketed samples, MYPF-M1, MYPF-M2 and MYPF-M3 were also performed. The diagnostic features obtained were found to be complying with the standards mentioned in respective volume of API. The in-vitro anthelmintic study of in-house formulated MYPF and its marketed formulations MYPF-M1, MYPF-M2 and MYPF-M3 were performed on adult Indian earthworm (Pheretima posthuma L. Vaill.). Albendazole was used as positive control. In-house formulated MYPF showed anthelmintic activity in dose-dependent manner and exhibit time of paralysis (12.59±2.75 min) and time of death (15.63±3.43 min) at concentration 25 mg/ml while it showed time of paralysis (8.74±3.29 min) and time of death (12.49±2.29 min) at concentration 50 mg/ml. Albendazole showed time of paralysis (7.64±0.87 min) and time of death (11.62±3.48 min) at concentration 10mg/ml. The result showed that in-house formulated MYPF exhibits excellent anthelmintic activity as compared to standard and marketed formulations.
