Abstract: Medical science has developed a lot and now replacing failed organs have just become matter of a regular major operation! It is possible only when there is availability of the donor. Objective: We planned this study to determine whether geographic area make any difference in regards to awareness and perception in regards to organ donation and also to find out are there any supporting or hindering factors for organ donation. We randomly selected a rural area and an urban block from Karad Taluka and after determining sample size studied the awareness and perception about organ donation at urban and rural locality. Result: The study population from urban and rural area was comparable and there was significant difference was found between organ donation information and acceptance in urban area and rural area with the chi square value of 6.824. More than 67 % population in rural area were either not knowing or were thinking that organ donation is illegal. The willingness to encourage and assist their family members to donate their organ in urban and rural population was also highly significant with chi square value of 19.841. Acceptance about donation of organs was also significantly positive in urban participants over rural respondents. Conclusion: The awareness, acceptance and attitude towards organ donation and organ transplantation and related legal problems were found to be significantly lower in the rural population. The study finding also suggested that even in urban area sources of knowledge and facilities where organ donation is possible is limited. It is essential to spread knowledge in population about organ donation and knowledge about organs that can be donated. Time interval between organ donation and death and process of signing organ donation card should also be advocated.
