Abstract: Herbal medicines are presently in demand and their status is increasing day by day. Moringa oleifera, Murraya koenigii, Ocimum basilicum, Vetiver zizanoides, and Glycyrrhiza glabra are very useful plants in tropical countries. They have been used in the traditional medicinal system for centuries in various disease healing processes. The objectives of the study were to comprehensively study and compare the medicinal properties of these common herbs used in Ayurved and the folklore medicine. The soxhlet extraction method was applied for the extracting phytochemicals using methanol. Standard phytochemical screening was performed to identify the secondary metabolites. The presence of medicinal properties viz. antioxidant activity, anti-diabetic activity and anti-inflammatory in these plants were also determined by the standard in vitro methods. The results revealed the presence of secondary metabolites like alkaloids, flavonoids, terpenoids, phenols tannins, saponins, and vitamin C. The in vitro antioxidant, anti-diabetic and anti-inflammatory activities were comparable to the standard drugs. This study provides a piece of evidence to support the traditional medicinal use of these plants.
