Exploring Herb-Drug interaction on Glycemic Effect in Preclinical Studies – A Human Safety Perspective

Author: SYED SAGHEER AHMED, M. RUPESH KUMAR, RAJESH KOWTI, B. RAMESH
Abstract: Background and objective: Medicinal plants play a vital role in the management of diabetes mellitus. Many studies have been confirmed the beneficial hypoglycemic effects of medicinal plants in the management of diabetes mellitus. Use of herbal formulations in addition to the regular therapy with allopathic medicines could be more effective for the long-term management of type 2 diabetes. To summarize various Pharmacodynamic and Pharmacokinetic interactions of allopathic oral hypoglycemic drugs with herbal medicines or plant products. Methods: Various databases like Google Scholar, Pubmed and Scopus are used to review and gather information for this article. Result: Simultaneous or combined administration of allopathic medications with herbal drugs would be beneficial only when there is no herb-drug interaction or any adverse effect. Various plant components have been switching to modify Pharmacodynamics and Pharmacokinetics of allopathic medications. As per the review, concurrent administration proved beneficial interaction but few herbs showed antagonistic effect when administered concomitantly with allopathic drugs. Conclusion: There is a regular practice among the peoples, especially in the rural areas that they may administer herbal products along with allopathic medicines by assuming the safety of the herbal products without intimating to their physician or health care providers. People must ask their physicians or health care providers before using herbal products along with conventional therapy.
