Awareness Of Oral Cancer Among College Students In Thiruvaiyaru

Abstract: Oral cancer is a significant health problem, Mouth cancer is preventable by avoiding risk factors.Due to lack of awareness of oral cancer in the public about and its risk factors it causes more death. The aim of present study was to determine the level of awareness of oral cancer in Thiruvaiyaru. The cross sectional was done on college students in Thiruvaiyaru. Students from different colleges were involved in this study. Students participated in the study are by random sampling method. Students who are willing are only participated in this study. Students who are not willing to participate in this study are excluded. Data was collected by well structured questions questionnaire which included questions relating to sociodemographic such as age, gender, awareness of oral cancer. Out of 100 students questioned males are 47% and females are 53%. In response to the type of cancer most commonly heard of, 40% of college students were familiar with lung cancer, 8% skin cancer and 29% blood cancer while only 23%knew the word oral cancer but 84% students Heard about oral cancer. When asked about risk factors for oral cancer 69% answered tobacco and 24% students answered smoking and 4% answered poor oral hygiene. When asked about the site of oral cancer 29% answered floor of mouth and 35% answered mucous membrane and 18% answered under the tongue.when asked about symptoms most of them don’t know the symptoms.When students were asked about dental visit 95% visit only when there is trouble. 44% of students answered that they don't know the curability of cancer.This study included 14% of smokers, 24% of students who consumed alcohol, and 8% of pan-chewers so this shows that the educated population of this region is unaware of basic knowledge about oral cancer especially about its site and symptoms.
