International Caries Classification And Management System- Clinical Practice Guidelines

Author: SNEHA PAI, NIVEDHITHA M.S
Abstract: International caries classification and management system (ICCMS) is a set of clinical protocols that is designed for diagnosis, prevention and to take necessary decisions for restorations in order to preserve the tooth structure and restore it only when indicated. This system is based on the widely used and established International caries detection and assessment system (ICDAS). ICCMS was introduced to emphasize more on caries prevention, control the progression of initial lesion, restoration of moderate to extensive carious lesion in order to preserve as much tooth structure as possible. ICCMS revolves around 5 elements: ? Classification of lesions by caries staging and activity assessment. ? Management by personalised caries prevention, control and tooth preserving operative care. ? History of the patient that helps in assessing the caries risk. ? Decision making- involves formulating a comprehensive plan for the carious lesion which includes both preventive and restorative care based on the extent of the lesion and risk assessment. ? Outcomes that are designed to evaluate health promotion, disease control and patient centered quality metrics. This article gives an overview of ICCMS that helps in delivering effective, risk based management of caries that restores cavitated lesions, controls initial caries non operatively and prevents development of new carious lesions.
