Comparative Evaluation of Antiplaque Effectiveness of Ayurvedic And Fluoridated Toothpaste– A Single Blind Randomized Control Trial.

Author: E. SAARUSREE, JAYASHRI PRABAKAR
Abstract: Background Periodontal disease was one of the major dental diseases affecting oral health. It was considered to be the major cause for tooth loss in adult patients. Success on periodontal treatment mainly based on the effect of maintaining oral health care. Improper maintenance can cause recurrence of the disease. Aim To compare the anti-plaque effectiveness of Ayurvedic and fluoridated toothpaste Materials And Methods A single blind randomised control trial was conducted among 20 healthy individuals. The participants were randomly allocated into two groups. Group 1(experimental group-Ayurvedic toothpaste), group 2 ( controlled group-fluoridated toothpaste). Before conducting the trial, study design was explained to the qualifying participant and informed consent was obtained from the voluntary patients who were willing to participate in the study. Erythrosin disclosing solution was used to disclose the plaque. The plaque index was recorded at baseline and 7th day. Wilcoxon signed Rank test used to compare the mean differences before and after treatment within each group for Plaque index score. Mann-Whitney ‘U’ test to estimate differences between the mean Plaque index score between the groups. Result A statistically significant reduction in mean Plaque Index score was observed in both Group I and Group II at baseline and 7th day follow up. But there was no statistically significant difference was observed between the groups at the 7th day of follow up. Conclusion To conclude, there was no statistically significant difference observed in the mean plaque index between group I and group II at the 7th day of follow up. Hence, Ayurvedic tooth paste can be used as an effective antimicrobial oral hygiene measure against plaque-induced dental caries.
