In Vitro Antibacterial, Free Radical Scavenging Activity of Aqueous and Ethanolic Extracts of Capparis Decidua

Author: PREETHA S, ANITHA ROY, RAJESHKUMAR S
Abstract: Background: The administration of plant extract from medicinal plants for treatment of several diseases is being followed in the traditional and conventional system of medicine. The search for non-toxic effective natural compounds rich in antioxidants is warranted in recent years to combat the stress and to fight against diseases. The antibacterial activity is another widely studied activity of the plant as there has been a development of resistant bacterial strains to the most common antibiotics which has been observed in recent years. Capparis decidua is one such very important medicinal plant of the north western region of our country having its unique place in the treatment of many diseases in the traditional system of medicine. Materials and methods Aqueous and ethanolic extract of the plant Capparis decidua fruit is assessed for its antioxidant and antibacterial activity. Antibacterial activity is assessed using agar well diffusion method. Antioxidant activity is assessed by DPPH free radical scavenging assay. Result and Discussion The Aqueous and ethanolic extract of Capparis decidua fruit shows very good antioxidant activity when compared with the control. Both the extract preparations showed a very good antioxidant activity against DPPH at different concentrations. The plant also shows good antibacterial activity against bacterial strains like Enterococcus faecalis, klebsiella pneumonia, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Streptococcus mutans, Escherichia coli. Conclusion The Aqueous and ethanolic extract of Capparis decidua thus possesses good antioxidant activity and antibacterial activity. But further investigations are required to study the phytochemicals involved for its activity
