Effectiveness of Aloe Vera in the Healing of an Extraction Socket: A Prospective, Randomized, Double - Blind Clinical Study

Author: DR. SOYA ALFRED, DR. ABDUL WAHAB, DR. M. SIVAKUMAR
Abstract: Aim: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of aloe vera in the healing of the extraction socket. Materials and Method: The study design was a double blinded Randomised control trial. Patients who visited the department of oral and maxillofacial surgery for the therapeutic extraction of mandibular premolars were assessed for enrolment. Patients were divided into two groups, group A and group B. In Group A, patients were treated with aloe vera gel application in the extraction socket. In Group B - Patients were given a placebo in the extraction socket. Patients in both groups were prescribed Paracetamol 500 mg thrice a day for three days. Patients were asked to report back after 7 days. They were contacted over the telephone to score the pain. If the pain score was greater than 5 they were asked to report to the hospital. Results: A total of 120 healing extraction sockets was assessed using the Landry, Turnbull, Howley index. The healing index of group A (aloe vera group) obtained a mean value of 4, which denoted excellent healing. The healing index of group B (placebo group) obtained a mean value of 2, which denoted poor healing. The pain was rated using the numerical pain rating scale (1-6). A range of scores between 1 - 4 was observed in group A. In group B pain rating scores ranged between 2 - 6. Conclusion: In this study, we conclude that aloe vera has excellent healing properties on extraction sockets. We recommend further studies with a large sample.
