Synthesis and Characterisation of Lycopene Mediated Silver Nanoparticle Using Transmission Electron Microscopy- An In Vitro Study

Author: KARTHIKEYAN MURTHYKUMAR, SANKARI MALAIAPPAN, RAJESHKUMAR
Abstract: Background: Nanoparticles are the basic essential elements in the wall of nanotechnology and it exhibits fabulous advanced characteristic features based on their properties such as size, morphology and other size dependent properties. The large-scale application of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in areas such as chemical sensing, nanomedicine, and electronics has led to their increased demand. Lycopene is a powerful antioxidant and the main carotenoid in tomato products possesses the greatest quenching ability of singlet oxygen among the various carotenoids. The combination of lycopene with silver nanoparticles has enhanced antibacterial and antioxidant property which could help in treatment of various oral diseases. Aim: The present study aimed at synthesis and characterization of lycopene mediated silver nanoparticles. Materials and Methods: The Lycopene capsule of 0.5mg was dissolved and gently grounded with 100ml distilled water. Grounded lycopene was boiled at 70ºC for 15 min and filtered. Collected filtrate was used for bioreduction of silver ions to silver nanoparticles. Morphological characterization of nanoparticles was characterized by the Transmission electron microscope (TEM). Results: The lycopene when exposed to silver nitrate solution the biosynthesis of nanoparticles was identified by colour change from yellow colour into yellowish brown within 5-10mins.Lycopene mediated silver nanoparticles showed a size of around 2-40nm with spherical shape nanoparticles is observed indicating the dispersivity to be in a narrow range under Transmission electron microscope(TEM). Conclusion: The colour change from yellow to brown and surface plasmon resonance of Uv-vis spectra at 440nm confirms the formation of silver nanoparticles. Size and shape of nanoparticles were analysed by a Transmission electron microscope (TEM) showing the polydisperse and mostly spherical shape of nanoparticles with aggregation.
